Is High Resting Heart Rate Related To Increased Risk Of Dementia?

Dec 27, 2021

n 2,147 participants (over 60 years old, living in Stockholm), the researchers checked whether the resting heart rate is related to dementia and cognitive impairment, regardless of known risk factors such as cardiovascular disease. It is necessary to use an oximeter,a Stethoscope or an instrument that can measure heart rate to measure the heart rate frequently to observe the physical condition.

This study conducted a 12-year follow-up survey of participants. The results showed that the resting heart rate (resting heart rate of a normal adult is 60-100 beats per minute) is 80 beats per minute or more. People with a heart rate of 60-69 beats per minute have an average 55% higher risk of developing dementia. This study cannot establish a causal relationship, but the researchers proposed several possible explanations, including the influence of underlying cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular risk factors, arteriosclerosis, and the imbalance between sympathetic and parasympathetic activities.

According to Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI), the number of dementia patients worldwide is expected to increase from 55 million to 139 million from 2020 to 2050. So far, no cure has been found, but there is evidence that maintaining a healthy lifestyle and a healthy heart can help delay the onset of dementia and relieve symptoms.

The heart and lung organs of the elderly are physiologically aging, with insufficient oxygen uptake and insufficient oxygen supply. The human body relies on blood to transmit oxygen. If there is less blood, there will naturally be less oxygen. With less oxygen, the physical condition naturally declines. Therefore, the elderly should use pulse oximetry to test the blood oxygen level every day. Once the blood oxygen is below the warning level, oxygen should be supplemented as soon as possible. The stethoscope is used to collect and amplify sounds from the heart, lungs, arteries, veins and other internal organs. The main measurement indicators of the oximeter are pulse rate, blood oxygen saturation, and perfusion index (PI). Blood oxygen saturation is one of the important basic data in clinical medicine. The elderly should have regular physical examinations and observe their physical conditions.
