Surgical Plaster Cast Splint

It is mainly used for the external fixation of fracture or sprain to make the bone heal in orthopedics, plastic surgery and general surgery.

Plaster fixation is one of the external fixation methods in orthopedics and traumatology. Medical gypsum is an amorphous powder formed by crushing, heating and dehydration of natural calcium sulfate. The gypsum bandage made of this gypsum powder and absorbent gauze is soaked in warm water and wound around the limbs. After drying, it becomes a hard solid to achieve the purpose of shaping and fixing.

Common types of plaster bandages

（1） Plaster support

Fold the plaster bandage into a plaster strip according to the required length, soak it, apply it to one side of the limb, and then wrap it with gauze bandage for fixation and forming. Generally, 10 ~ 12 layers of 10cm wide gypsum bandage are required for upper limb gypsum support, and 12 ~ 15 layers of 15cm wide gypsum bandage are required for lower limb gypsum support. The width of the plaster support is generally about 2 / 3 of the peripheral diameter of the limb.

（2）Surgical Plaster Cast Splint

Two plaster strips are made according to the method of making plaster support, which are respectively placed and pasted on the extension side and flexion side of the fixed limb, plastered and pasted on the limb by hand, and then wrapped with gauze bandage.

（3） Gypsum pipe type

It refers to the method of wrapping and fixing limbs with plaster bandage and plaster strip. That is, on the basis of gypsum splint, gauze bandage is changed to gypsum bandage for fixation, so that the front and rear gypsum strips form a whole, which is suitable for upper and lower limbs.

（4） Trunk plaster

It refers to the method of wrapping and fixing the trunk with a combination of gypsum strip and gypsum bandage. The commonly used trunk plaster includes head, neck and chest plaster, gypsum collar, shoulder herringbone plaster, gypsum vest, gypsum waist circumference and hip herringbone plaster. With the continuous progress of new materials and new processes and the continuous emergence of new external fixation devices, the application scope of large-scale gypsum fixation involving the trunk has been gradually reduced, such as hard plastic collar and inflatable collar instead of gypsum collar, shoulder abduction support instead of shoulder herringbone gypsum, spine device instead of gypsum vest, frog external fixation device instead of frog gypsum, etc.
